Covid-19 Quarantine fishing and photography – 4.19.2020
What day is it? Quarantine day what? Blursday?
This quarantine sure has been different and challenging but good in some ways too. I’m reading daily, and seeing photos, where families are getting back to the basics – family time, games, outside adventures – togetherness. Half of me wishes my kids were younger so we could do the same, but then I realize I like this season of our life too. I’m grateful to have my sons close, and to have a husband that likes exploring just as much as I do.
What I find the most challenging? Not being able to photograph PEOPLE – seniors, kids, families. It feels strange to come into an empty study and have no images to edit, no Sneak Peeks to post, and no videos to share. I love capturing people’s expressions, working with you to get that photo that tells a story! I am patiently waiting, well not really but I am trying, till the day I can get back behind my camera to take photos of YOU!
Until then, I will share our adventure photos AND hopefully make you laugh with a few of our mishaps. Well, most of the mishaps are mine, but hey it is what it is.
Last week we bought a neat little pontoon Jon boat, and I absolutely LOVE it. We've been alternating between kayaks and Nathan's Jon boat, but Bo decided we needed our own. Check out the picture! Looks overloaded huh? That'd be me; I am a bit of a hoarder when it comes to packing to go somewhere. I just believe in being prepared – who’s with me? In true hoarder style, not only do I have my own fishing tackle and pole, I have my big camera bag that has every essential item I may EVER need (on the water and off).
Back to our fishing story...it was a beautiful day, and we were treated to the sounds of the creek - songbirds, hawks, osprey, eagles, and one of my favs – the belted kingfisher. He has a cool cry that you can easily identify and it gets me grabbing for the camera every time! Midway on our journey upstream, a juvenile eagle and a belted kingfisher both joined us and followed alongside for a good while. We came across several groups of geese nesting in the tall grasses, I guess they were ‘geese a-laying’ (6 geese a-laying LOL).
All in all, I’d say it was a successful fishing day too - Bo snagged a BIG largemouth bass and a bowfin, and I caught a small bass and a perch. And at one point during our ride, we were surrounded by these huge fish jumping out of the water. Doing backflips, tail flipping – it was the craziest thing we’d seen. We soon realized they were Gar. Spawning maybe? They surely wouldn’t take any lurer or live bait we offered. It was a great ending to the day. Oh wait, there's more...
As I’m trying to catch one of these aerobatic fish, an eagle and an osprey begin an air fight right over top of us. The eagle is chasing the osprey, and screeching. It was amazing! They weren’t real close, and unfortunately, I didn’t have a longer lens, but you’ll catch the drift when you see the photos. As I’m trying to follow the sky antics, Bo is still trying to catch one of these fish.
…. Oh yeah, did I tell you that last week I cast both the line AND my rod overboard? Thankfully Bo was able to grab it quick and get it back in the boat. He had a good laugh at me for a while on that one, although I personally think it was more exasperation on how I did it. LOL
Once the sky antics moved on, I went back to fishing. Cast, cast, cast - nothing. Next thing I know, I see this pink blur as the top end of my rod goes flying with the line. My initial thought and comment were ‘what the heck’? My rod is pink so to see pink flying through the air, I was confused. So, in a natural defense to my what the heck thought, my hands went up in the air in the same what the heck motion. SEE WHERE I’M GOING???? So naturally, since I raised and opened my hands, the rest of my rod goes flying too…. about 15 feet out in to the creek! I turn to see Bo looking at me with this incredulous look like what did you just do. Give me a second… I can’t type and belly laugh at the same time! For the next 10 minutes I tried to explain, rationalize my thought and actions. He just wasn’t buying it!
This trip will surely become a favorite memory in our family, one Bo won't soon forget and one I won’t live down.
Thanks for reading through the blog! Share a memory of your fishing escapes or mishaps; I’d love to read them!
